Abstract

The activity of Lev Chachkovsky, a local historian and amateur archaeologist, is analyzed in the paper. After leaving the civil office for a well-deserved rest, he became interested in the historical and topographical study of famous annalistic cities and achieved significant results in this area of historical science. During 1925—1930, Lev Chachkovsky, together with Yaroslav Khmilevsky, conducted a study of the historical topography of ancient Halych and its surroundings. The work «Princely Halych» was published in Stanyslaviv only in 1938, after the death of Lev Chachkovsky. The second edition of this book, supplemented by Ya. Khmilevsky, with a foreword by Ya. Pasternak, was published in Chicago (USA) in 1959. In the Notes of the Shevchenko Scientific Society, his work dedicated to medieval Belz was published posthumously in Lviv in 1937. In fact, during the lifetime of the researcher, only a small piece of information about Terebovlya was published in a popular scientific Lviv journal of the interwar period. Three more works of the author dedicated to Terebovlya, Zvenyhorod, and Busk have been preserved as manuscripts.

The main attention in the article is paid to the historical and topographical studies of Medieval Terebovlya. It is emphasized that the researcher put forward and developed a substantiated version about the location of the main stronghold of the annalistic city on Zamkova Mountain. The importance of the data collected by L. Chachkovsky on archaeological sites, toponyms, and micro toponyms in Terebovl and its surroundings was noted for further archaeological research.

It is highlighted that the historical and topographical studies of Terebovlya conducted by L. Chachkovsky are not only of historiographical interest but are an important contribution to the study of the medieval cities of the Halych-Volhynia region. They will continue to serve as an important guide for the archaeological excavations in the annalistic cities, confirming, clarifying, or refuting the opinions expressed by the researchers.

The appendix contains an obituary in memory of Lev Chachkovsky from the newspaper «Dilo», the author of which could have been Yaroslav Pasternak.
