Abstract

The stone tools from the Belogrudovka culture settlement, have been recently found near the village of Selivanove, Kirovohrad region, in the southern part of the Dnipro Right Bank Forest-Steppe area are published in the paper. These are the artefacts relating agriculture (grain grater, grinding stones of several types) and metallurgy (pestle). The two grinding stones and the pestle are distinguished by the perfection of their form and meticulousness of their workmanship and have no direct parallels yet. The stone tools were researched not only by traditional archaeological methods but also by geological ones in the Institute of Geology of Kyiv National Taras Shevchenko University. It is ascertained that the tools are made of 4 rocks: quartzite (grain grinder), gneiss (2 grinding stones), sandstone (another grinding stone) and dolerite (pestle). With the exception of gneiss the outcrops of which are located in the area of the settlement near Selivanovo village the deposits of other rocks are located at a distance of tens and even hundreds kilometres from the Selivanove settlement. This circumstance shows, in our opinion, the existence of well-developed communications between the suppliers of raw materials and their delivery to the settlement for the stone cutter (or cutters). There are certain reasons to say that the dolerite pestle and the large gneiss rubbing stone have been made directly at the Selivanove settlement. The preliminary date of the stone tools is determined by the framework of the existence of the Belogrudivka culture of the Bronze Age, i. e. during the 12th—9th cent. BC.
