Abstract

The activities of archaeologist, museum curator and theater artist Borys Levchenko (1935—1987) is examined in the paper. His work biography can be divided into the following periods: 1) theatrical: 1950—1960s, when he worked in the Medvyn House of Culture and was heading the theater troupe; 2) archaeological: 1970 — first half of the 1980s, when he was an employee of the Institute of Archaeology of the NAS of the USSR in Kyiv; 3) museum: 1980s, when he headed the Museum of the History of the Bohuslav Region and Marko Vovchok Museum in Bohuslav. Theatrical activity of Borys Levchenko and the Medvin Amateur Theater falls on the period of the sixties. Its repertoire, filled with Ukrainian literature classics, the emphasized succession of this theater from the theater of the times of the Ukrainian Revolution, is consonant with the Ukrainian national rise of that time. The archaeological activity of Borys Levchenko was not limited to work in the Department of Preventive Excavations of the Institute of Archaeology of the NAS of the USSR, where he explored the archaeological sites in Cherkasy, Kherson, and Mykolaiv regions, it continued during his work at the Museum of the History of the Bohuslav Region, where he focused mainly on the research of Scythian archaeological culture. In addition to the scientific publications he also filled the local history museum of Bohuslav and other museum institutions with the artefacts from archaeological excavations that he conducted with the Institute of Archaeology. The expositions of the Museum of the History of Bohuslav Region and the Museum-Estate of Marko Vovchok in Bohuslav were created by him according to the historical-chronological principle. The Museum of the History of Bohuslav Region is characterized by an ensemble method of organizing the exhibition. Borys Levchenko used here the scenographic skills acquired in the theater, his knowledge obtained from historical sources, and modern equipment.
